This design may not be one of my oldest, but I believe it was my first hat ever made – and one of the first projects I made for Little Chick. It was developed exactly 5 years ago this week out of necessity. We left for our annual camping trip and suddenly I realized we didn’t have a hat to protect her little head. There isn’t a lot of shade where we go camping, and I was afraid the top of her head would get sunburned. Fortunately I had some cotton yarn with me and so I made up this simple design. The cotton insured the hat was cool and breathable.

(p.s. Isn’t that just the cutest little head? It’s grown so much over the last few years!)

Years passed (as most of my design have seen happen) and I decided to dig this one out again, add a variety of sizes and get it refined (tested, tech edited) so it would be a great project for any crochet skill level.
The pattern comes with two different flower designs – a 5-petal and a 6-petal flower. One of my testers suggested that you could even make one of each in contrasting colors and layer them to create a 3-dimensional flower.
