FO Friday – more hats

I tried to swear off KALs/CALs for November.  That lasted all of one day.  I guess it’s a hazard of being a moderator on the KAL Fanatics over on Ravelry; I have to help stay on top of new posts, so I read them all.  I even contemplated joining in the NaKniSweMo (National Knit-a-Sweater-in-a-Month) challenge.  But it’s already a week into November and I have limited crafting time so I decided it would be better to pass.  Instead, I’m trying to work on some smaller projects.

When I came up with the design for my harvest leaf bag (which is still not done), I purchased some Cascade 220 Superwash for the main part of the bag, but then didn’t like the way it looked.

I ended up purchasing different yarn that I like much better for the bag, but I was still left with two skeins of the Cascade.  I found a use for most of one (7/10ths of it to be exact).  I designed this hat!

I really need to find a better model.  Or maybe just not get so excited to take a picture that I don’t wait to put nicer clothes on, fix my hair, etc.

I’m rather impressed that it turned out almost exactly as I pictured it in my head.  This was the Designer’s Challenge for Sept-Oct.  The challenge was:

Object: hat/beanie
Theme: the woods
Technique: cables
This time of year the woods are completely covered with fallen leaves so I used that as my basis. I also wanted a non-smooth base for the hat as the ground is bumpy. Cables are not exactly my strong point. I’ve only done a couple of projects with them, but I used different cables in the ribs of the leaf as well as to help define the edges of the leaf.

Just tonight I finished one other hat in a 2 to 6-year-old size. I was afraid that Little Chick wouldn’t want to wear it and I’d end up donating (which would be ok too). I gave her the choice of two different patterns and said I was going to make it in blue but she reminded me that “pink is my flavorite {sic} color”. It’s amazing what you can get a child that age to agree to though when you tell her that it’s an Elsa hat (Frozen). She announced tonight that she loves it!

And I have one more afghan square too that I finished.  Now I’m only something like 7 behind.  The good thing is that these only take an hour or two to make up, so it won’t take long to catch up; I just need to make it a priority.

  1. Well done! I love leafy knits 🙂

  2. Nice hats! I liked the design with the leaves, you are creativ! And the “Elsa” hat is lovely.
Yes, I guess our cat wanted to “help” 🙂 She sleeps beside me all night when I knit. When I start to get ready to go to bed, she jumps down and go to the door to go out. But now we had some colder nights, temperatures down to frost. Then she jumped down to the floor and hiding under the table. Smart cat 😉
